10 Birthday Gifts Your Kids Will Love

by Adriana Copaceanu

Everyone loves a special gift on their birthday: especially our kids! I have put together a list of 10 memorable gifts you can gift your children on their birthday without breaking the bank.

Art supplies: almost all kids enjoy crayons, markers, stickers, colored pencils, gel pens, special papers and scissors, sidewalk chalk, water colors, homemade rubber stamps, "how to draw" books calligraphy instructions, or origami instructions and colored paper. An art supply gift not only encourages the youngsters to use their imagination, but it can be an extra treat when you spend time with them using them.

Books are always great gifts for any age: you can get musical or squeaky books for the little ones, short stories for preschoolers, adventure books for 9-11 year olds, and so on: there is a book for every taste. You can also buy books about your child's interests, books about careers, etc.

A classic movie, which never goes out of style, great for when friends come over, or on that day when they are bored and nothing else could help.

For older boys, a tool kit would be great: gives them the opportunity to work side by side with dad, and possibly learn a life skill.

For older girls, beads could mean hours of fun. Buy a variety of colors and shapes and watch you little princess enjoy hours of happiness.

To the gourmand give a roll of sugar cookie dough from the grocery store, along with a couple of cookie cutters, and a rolling pin. Again, this would be a lot of fun for the little one to make, and share with friends and family.

For the nature lover, a gardening kit with a couple of small pots filled with potting soil, some seeds, and a plastic watering can give countless hours of fun, while caring for the plants, and watching them grow.

A disposable camera will add a boost to the party. If your budget permits, add a small picture album, and you've instantly created wonderful memories of that birthday.

A basket of fun: find an inexpensive basket, or another container, maybe a pail for kids and fill it with fun, cheap stuff. For instance, silly putty, a water gun, a deck of cards, sidewalk chalk, etc. For boys, you can add some little cars and for girls, throw in some hair accessories. Finish it off with some candy or a pez dispenser and you have a fun gift. If you find some fun, small things that most kids think are neat, pick up a bunch so that at any time you have a supply of items to mix and match for a birthday.

Children crave attention from important people in their lives, (mom, dad, grandparent, aunt, older sibling). Give that special child the gift of time: a day out with you complete with lunch, a movie, and/or shopping for the gift of their choice.

Homemade Gifts Are From The Heart

by Chris Robertson

If you're like most people, every month there is at least one occasion that calls for a gift. It may be a birthday, an anniversary, or one of the many "official" holidays - such as Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, or Christmas - when gifts are expected and given. In a year's time, you and your family members most likely give several dozen gifts. It's not a stretch to think that, after awhile, gift giving puts a strain on both your imagination and your pocketbook.

Honestly, after you've given personal electronics, DVDs, video games, small appliances, and other types of gifts, you well of ideas may run dry. Then you might move on to gift certificates, which will get you through several more rounds of gift-giving occasions. But after that, where do you turn?

It may be time to go back to basics and to think about creating your own gifts. Homemade gifts come from the heart, and your recipient will appreciate the time you've spent planning and creating a unique gift. Homemade gifts do take time, but they often cost less than gifts purchased from a store - particularly if you are able to buy the components at wholesale prices.

Even though I'm not particularly talented in the realm of arts and crafts, I've managed to create - or orchestrate the creation of - several types of homemade gifts. Of the "homemade" gifts I've given, I think my sisters have most treasured the photographs of our parents. I searched through old family albums, and selected meaningful photos of our parents. I've then gone to the local drugstore and had the photos digitally imaged and printed. From there, it was simply to purchase frames and insert the photos.

Working from the same theme, I've also given photos to my children. Instead of spending lots of money on frames, though, I've bought frames at wholesale prices and decorated them using my glue gun and craft supplies. I thought of the frame as though it was a scrapbook page, and attached small items that are related to the photo. One wall of my son's room is filled with photos of the people and places that are meaningful to him, all in frames that are decorated. On his birthday, he always looks forward to the framed photo that he knows awaits him.

Homemade gifts are also great for kids to make. Painted glass, for example, is easy to do and will be treasured by grandma for years to come. All it takes to make a painted glass vase, for example, is some tempera paint mixed with glue, and clear glaze to seal the paint once it's dry. Homemade jewelry is also a great gift, particularly when you can buy beads and other supplies wholesale. Likewise, it's easy to make or personalize toys - particularly those made from wood.

As my son always says, gifts made with love are unique treasures.

Give Something Different With a Unique Wedding Shower Gift

by Amy Lee Johnson

Wedding shower gifts can be as unique as the recipient. The shower organizer should consider the personality, style and interests of the bride when planning the party. With a wedding shower theme that fits the unique qualities of the bride, shower guests will be prompted to use their imaginations to brainstorm creative gift ideas.

Love of the Outdoors

For the outdoorsy bride-to-be, organize an adventurous shower activity such as mountain biking, rock climbing or camping. Unique wedding shower gifts could include items such as a cozy tent, a sleeping bag for two, and a book on romantic outdoor getaways.

Culinary Gifts

If the bride lacks confidence in her cooking skills, why not organize her shower around a culinary theme. The shower activity may include a cooking demonstration or wine tasting event. All attendees would be asked to bring three of their favorite personal recipes, written on cards; the cards would then be presented to the bride in a special recipe box or book. Guests could bring shower gifts such as live herb-garden starts, a serving tray for breakfast in bed or a picnic basket for two.

New Homeowner Gifts

For the couple about to move into their first home, organize a home improvement shower. Gifts could include tool sets, books on household repairs or decorating tips, and lawn tools such as rakes, hoes and leaf blowers.

Honeymoon Gifts

Is the couple about to embark on a tropical honeymoon? Organize a luau shower, with leis, grass-skirted tables and inflatable palm trees. Shower gifts might include scuba lessons, snorkeling equipment, his and hers beach towels, or a gift certificate for a couples massage at their honeymoon resort.

Artistic Gifts

Don’t leave the happy couple staring at blank walls. Organize a shower where each guest brings a piece of art to decorate the newlywed home. The gifts do not necessarily need to be expensive; guests can acquire unique items from local Saturday markets or craft fairs. Shower guests may even wish to contribute a special painting or framed photograph of their own creation. Along with filling their home, the wedding shower gifts will hold special significance to the newlyweds as it will remind them of close friends and family members.

How The Gift Tax Works

by Gray Rollins

Each year millions of Americans give a gift to other individuals that they know. Gifts can be considered anything from a new vehicle, to a trip, to a piece of land. A gift tax is a tax that is imposed when an individual gives away a certain amount of gifts that are considered valuable.

According the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), an individual who gives a gift or a combination of gifts to one person that is valued at over eleven thousand dollars must pay a gift tax. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does not require that the individual who received the gift pays the gift tax. The only individual who is responsible for reporting and paying the gift tax is the person who gave the gift away. A gift is when something is given away at no cost. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) defines a gift as something that is given away without receiving anything of similar value in return. Gifts that are recognized by the government include property and money.

There are a number of exceptions to the gift tax imposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Gifts that are given to a spouse are not considered taxable. Another gift tax exclusion includes gifts that are used for education or medical expenses. This gift tax is often applied when a close family friend or family relative pays a portion of the college tuition expenses or medical expenses of someone they know. Gifts that are given to a charity are also not considered taxable. Individuals can donate their land, their vehicle, or money to an established charity and it will not be considered taxable. http://www.taxhelpdirectory.com/taxstratagies/.

Individuals who give a taxable gift that exceed eleven thousand dollars are required to file a Form 709: United States Gift (and Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Return). The Form 709 can be obtained by contacting the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or by printing the form off of the Internet. It is also possible to obtain an online form by visiting the website of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at http://www.irs.gov. This form comes in a PDF format that allows individuals to enter in their information using the computer, and they can print off the completed forms to be mailed to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In addition to the eleven thousand dollars a year gift tax restriction, individuals are also subject to a lifetime gift tax limit. That lifetime limit is one million dollars. Individuals who exceed one millions dollars in gifts in any number of years are required to start paying taxes on any more gifts that are given in the future. This means that even if an individual gives a gift that is less than eleven thousand dollars, the next year they are still required to pay a gift tax because they exceeded their lifetime gift tax allowance.

Giving another individual or charity a gift of money or property is a great way to reduce the likelihood of having to pay an estate tax later on in life. In addition to offering a number of tax benefits, a gift also allows individuals to give back to their children, family, friends, or community.

by Craig Thornburrow

Need some ideas for that extra special gift for a new baby, this article is for you. It will present some excellent ideas to help in your search to find them.

The best and most convenient place to start your search for new baby gifts is online. By looking for baby gifts online through websites your going to save yourself a trip to the mall, all the wandering around you will most likely do, the drive there and back and of course more importantly, a great deal of money no doubt.

Romantic Gifts Show You Care

by Chris Robertson

Love may come from the heart, but romance is a state of mind. And let's face it - not all of us are born with a natural inclination to be romantic. Some of us simply have a hard time expressing our feelings, and even more difficulty showing the women in our lives that we care about them. Nonetheless, it's important to cultivate our romantic inclinations; after all, it's the currency that most women use to evaluate our feelings for them. A gesture or a gift can express what our words cannot, and can communicate both our thoughtfulness and our caring.

The first step in tapping into our romantic nature is to look at things from the woman's perspective. Notice that the ways in which you view the world - and your relationship - are different than the ways she views things. Next, make it a point to notice the small things that catch her attention. Perhaps she comments on how delicious a certain wine is, how beautiful the neighbor's yard looks with a particular flower in bloom, or how she saw a gorgeous piece of jewelry at the mall.

Once you begin to pay attention to what brings her pleasure and happiness, you're on your way to being a true romantic. The thing to keep in mind is that romance is about her desires, not yours. Your satisfaction comes from watching her joy.

The next step in cultivating your romantic nature is showing your affection through your deeds. Believe it or not, the most mundane things - like noticing the clean dishes need to be put away and doing it without being asked - can mean a tremendous amount to a woman. Plucking a flower from your garden and presenting her with it when you come home from work can bring tears of appreciation to her eyes. And, when the occasions arise, selecting meaningful gifts will, from her perspective, affirm your feelings for her.

The primary rule of romantic gift giving is selecting something that she will enjoy. That may sound simplistic, but more than man has been bewildered at why his wife or girlfriend wasn't thrilled with the Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo he had given her. After all, he considered it the perfect gift, and would have been grateful to receive a gaming system.

Instead, select a gift that conveys that you understand her sense of style and taste, and that you appreciate her as a woman. Perfume, tasteful lingerie, and jewelry are always appropriate. She might be delighted with personal electronics, as long as you add a personal touch. If you give her an iPod or mp3 player, for example, download songs from her favorite artists.

When you're cultivating your romantic nature, the most important thing to remember is that you don't have to be perfect. Gestures and gifts that communicate your thoughtfulness and appreciation of her as a person and as a woman are certain to delight her.

Chocolate: The Gift From The Gods

by Rosie Shaw

Chocolate – whether dark or light, bitter or sweet – is a treat considered to have come to Earth from the heaven as a gift from the gods. And indeed it is one of the most popular gift items the world over, at every occasion.

I have yet to meet a person who doesn't drool over chocolate and most people are ready to cheat on their diet for a chance to bite into this delicious delight. Some days ago, I found that a chocolate decoration workshop was taking place. So the moment I found out that there's a demonstration of chocolate decorations for cakes and desserts, I picked up the phone and made my reservations. I can make some decent tasting and looking cakes but the picture-perfect stuff that culinary experts come up with are beyond my capabilities. A pastry chef's trade secrets had to be learnt.

Armed with a notebook and pen, I arrived at the hotel where the Executive Chef, Guido Scarpellino, and his team were ready to show us how culinary masterpieces are created. Initially, the Chef traced the history of chocolate, and discussed some of its characteristics and properties. Then came the part when the first chocolate leaf was made and we were asked if any of us would like to try doing it for ourselves.

The demonstration included the making of chocolate leaves, cups, various cut out shapes, chocolate curls, flakes and different icing designs using both chocolate and butter icing. The chef also showed us how floral and other shapes can be created from chocolate. Guido is not only an expert at his craft, but he is also a great teacher who gave us many helpful hints about how to handle chocolate and repeated the demonstrations as many times as we asked him to.

Like its true of a lot of other things, practice is what one needs to be able to work well with chocolate and get the desired result. The quality of cooking chocolate also plays an important part in it so one has to make sure one buys a well-reputed brand, otherwise a lesser quality cooking chocolate will just mess things up. The choice of a dark, light or white chocolate for use totally depends on individual preferences. To be able to have your cake decked up lavishly with pretty chocolate decorations, there is just one thing that you need to take care of – your urge just to devour the chocolate yourself!!

Here are some tips for working with chocolate:

- Do not substitute cocoa for chocolate if a recipe demands you to use chocolate.

- Do not melt chocolate directly over heat as it burns very quickly. Break the chocolate up and place the pieces in a small bowl, or on a plate, set over a pan filled with gently simmering water so that the chocolate does not get too hot. Leave it to melt without stirring. Use as directed in the recipes.

- To cool any chocolate decorations that you are making, avoid putting it in the freezer as the chocolate is likely to ‘sweat’. It is better to cool it in the fridge or outside.

Here are techniques for making Simple Chocolate Curls and Chocolate Leaves

Chocolate Curls

To make simple curls, the chocolate should be at room temperature. Shave off long silvers using a vegetable peeler or a knife.

For a more professional look, melt the chocolate in a bowl set over simmering water.

Let it cool for one minute. Then pour it on to a slightly oiled work top and spread it out thinly with a spatula to 3mm.

Leave to cool and when it is on the point of setting, hold a long sharp knife upright, with a hand at either end, and pull it towards you with a gentle sawing action.

Let the curls on a baking sheet to harden.

Store between sheets of grease-proof paper in an air-tight tin.

Chocolate Leaves

You can use small leaves of any shape that you desire to make chocolate leaves.

Wash the leaves and dry them.

In a bowl of steaming, NOT boiling water, melt the chocolate.

Coat one side of the leave either by using a brush or by dragging each leaf over the chocolate.

Place on a plate to cool, in the refrigerator if you like, with the coated side up.

After an interval of 10-15 minutes, coat the leaves once or twice more with chocolate, allowing it to cool each time.

Multiple layers of chocolate make the leaves harder and easier to work with.

After the chocolate is hard again, gently peel off the leaf, starting from the stem end of it.

There you will have lovely chocolate leaves, complete with veins.

Use it to decorate the cake in any way you please.

Choosing Gifts For Your Mother

by Mary Williams

Choosing gifts for your mother is not an easy task to do. When we decide to buy a present, we cannot be 100 percent sure that she will really appreciate it or not. How will you know what she’ll appreciate? You are either a single mother yourself, you asked one what she could really use, or you read this article. A little bit of knowledge in this area goes a long way.

What you SHOULD NOT do:

Do not buy expensive things for her because you think she may like them. You may think it will be greatly appreciated because she likely wouldn’t or couldn’t afford to buy it for herself. This idea is wrong That’s usually not that case. She’ll be very gracious to your face and probably genuinely appreciate the thought. But she may be thinking “couldn’t she have just given me the money so I could get my brakes fixed” or “yeesch, I could pay my electric bill with the money she spent on this!” What many single mothers need is relief. They need a small slice of life taken off their shoulders. They need someone to take their children for three hours so they can have an uninterrupted bath or a nap.

What you SHOULD do:

What would bring a single mother great joy is to have you contact any of the utility companies and pay a month’s bill. She’d love car wash coupons because that may be something frivolous to her, but who doesn’t appreciate a nice clean car. “Let’s see, do I get eggs and milk, or do I drive my car through the car wash?” Or just show up someday with a hose and a bucket and wash it for her – inside and out. Make up babysitting coupons or better yet, just insist on picking up the kids Friday night to take them to a dinner and a movie. Give Mom some space.

What you have to do is finding a common theme in your mother. They don’t necessarily need help and wouldn’t ask for it, but if they received help, it would mean the WORLD to her. Instead of thinking of things that are special and pretty for her, consider what would make her life easier. This isn’t like the old adage you don’t buy your wife a frying pan for her birthday. With single parents, moms in particular, you need to keep in mind relief. How can you give this woman a small nugget of relief to make her life easier?

Fundraiser Gifts

by Andy Henry

Fundraiser Gifts

Fundraisers are a part of life and way for groups and companies to give back to the community. You can give back, too, by doing your part and helping with fundraising events, donating your time, energy, gifts and / or funds to the fundraisers to help raise awareness of the groups’ activities and support.

Donating funds to charity is a chance to put your money where your mouth is. Actions speak louder than words and investing in the work of charities can guarantee progress is made advancing nonprofit causes in which you believe.

Involve your children in the process, where applicable. Tell them about different causes, include them in charitable events and ask them to consider sharing a portion of their allowance to help causes they can understand. This will lead to a lifetime of caring, giving and happiness.

It will be good if you and the charity you consider to donate gifts consider methods of donating like bequests, charitable gift annuities, gifts-in-kind, endowments and many others. You can ask your tax advisor or attorney to help you make the best plan for you, your family and for the charities you support.

There are different ways in which you can donate gifts to fundraisers. Some people:

- donate cars, money, real estate, etc.
- purchase and donate items in bulk like from Ebay auctions.
- Purchase & donate gift baskets to be used as door prizes, even a baby gift basket can help the smallest recipient!

Do not wait to be asked to give a donation, be proactive. Take control of your generosity by researching causes, finding stable and effective charities, and by investing in making the world better now and for future generations.

Donating gifts to fundraisers is a nice way to make world better for tomorrow. Be a part of the future.

Mutually Beneficial Partnerships Require Unique Corporate Gifts

by James Zeller

A unique corporate gift like smoked sockeye salmon is well received for its’ taste, and it is a classy gift too. Alaska smoked salmon is a gourmet gift that some people would not normally purchase for themselves. It is remarkably affordable and a healthy alternative to chocolate.

Encouraged people achieve the best; dominated people achieve second best; neglected people achieve the least. – Author Unknown

Very few businesses stand completely alone. Partnerships are developed that utilize individual business strength to enhance the overall effectiveness of each. A manufacturer might link with a distribution firm allowing both to benefit financially from the shared arrangement.

This may be one of the best reasons to consider a unique corporate gift that acknowledges and celebrates the mutually beneficial relationship. A smoked salmon gift box lets your business partner know that you recognize and value a partnership that has allowed the targeted growth your company needs. Such a unique corporate gift is a well received symbol of respect and honor.

Each smoked salmon gift box is crafted with a natural cherry finish and the utmost in craftsmanship. A salmon is artistically inlayed in the wood and the result is an executive gift that includes 8 ounces of the finest Smoked Copper River sockeye salmon fillets. Your business partners will long remember your generosity and good taste. Such a gift lets your partners understand something important about you and your business - you exercise great care in both integrity and respect.

You have partnerships with people on your management team, peripheral business partners, customers and other inner office staff. Your business can not maintain optimal function without these team members participating in assisting in the success of your company. Any of these partners can be considered potential recipients of a value priced smoked salmon gift box.

The following recipe using smoked salmon may be used as an added personal touch when presenting this unique corporate gift to clients, staff or partners.

Appetizer Salmon Dip

1/6 cup extra Virgin olive oil
1 red onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 cloves garlic, minced
1 cups heavy cream
2 scallions, chopped
1/4 cup fresh parsley, sliced
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt (or salt substitute)
1 teaspoon course black pepper
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
½ teaspoon hot chili sauce
8 oz. Smoked Salmon, chopped

Heat the oil in large saucepan. Sauté the garlic, onions, and green pepper for about 10 minutes, until the vegetables soften. Reduce heat, pour in cream and slowly bring to a simmer. Stir in the scallions, parsley, basil, thyme, and continue to simmer until the sauce has thickened and reduced by a quarter. Add the Salmon, and chili sauce and let cook for an additional 5 minutes. Then serve to your grateful guests.

Our smoked salmon gift boxes are packed without using preservatives and are fully ready to eat with a smoked flavor that will get noticed and remain a topic of conversation for time to come. It may, in fact, be the best received gift you have ever given.

Each individual you work with would love to have confirmation that their efforts are noticed and appreciated. Well timed and unique corporate gifts like smoked salmon may result in a renewed and energized workplace. You shouldn’t be surprised if productivity rises due to improved morale.

5 Baby Shower Gifts That Mom Will Love

by Cynthia Marcano

With the pregnancy bug in the water system, you are bound to know someone who is having a baby, if you aren’t having one yourself. Pregnant women equal shopping time. Here are 5 gifts that any mother will most certainly be appreciative of. The baby shower gift ideas are great for those who are shopping or for mom’s to put on their gift registry.

1. Diapers, diapers and more diapers. That is quite a bland gift but a very much needed gift. I don’t any mom who will complain about having too many diapers with a newborn at home. To make diapers snazzy you have to dress it up a bit. You can find diaper cakes in lots of gift sites. Some come with as many as 150 diapers, plus booties, bibs and tons of other essentials for baby, but all in the shape of an all so cute cake.

2. Layettes, blankets, socks and burp cloths. Chances are they are going to get tons of these. However, these gifts tend to come in newborn or 3 months sizes which after a few weeks probably won’t serve its purpose anymore. Making this a great gift is if you buy them in larger sizes. After a few months, mom still has brand new gifts for the baby to enjoy.

3. Pamper products for Mom. The last few weeks of pregnancy are very uncomfortable and can be hard on Mom. Let Mom have the star treatment as well. Once the baby is born, Mom’s 15 minutes of fame are over.

4. Savings Bonds. A savings bond is a great way to help invest in the child’s future. While everyone is thinking of now you are thinking ahead. It may also help jumpstart parents to jumpstart on baby’s future if they haven’t already.

5. Gift Certificates. You can never go wrong with a gift certificate. Mom and Dad get to choose what they want and you gave them that satisfaction. The obvious choice for a gift certificate would where the registry is set up. If they do not have a registry set up, good choices could include their favorite supermarket (formula, diapers) or baby store. Another gift certificate idea could be a check card gift certificate. It works like a credit card and can be used anywhere.

Tip: I don’t suggest buying clothing unless the parents-to-be suggested so. Chances are they have already gone shopping and couldn’t resist those tiny adorable outfits.

Practical Gifts Can Outshine the Whimsical

by Chris Robertson

Throughout my life, I've been fortunate enough to be the beneficiary of the generosity and thoughtfulness of my family and friends. Over the years, I've received wonderful gifts, some of them whimsical and others practical. Although I've appreciated every single one, I've often found that the practical gifts I've received have had a longer lasting impact than the fanciful.

Ironically, my experience is that a friend or family member who gives me a practical gift - like a household gift - often apologizes for it. For example, I received a new vacuum cleaner from my significant other for Christmas. I desperately needed a new vacuum cleaner, and he did extensive research to find the most highly rated vacuum cleaner in his price range. It was exactly what I wanted and needed, but he nonetheless apologized for the gift's unromantic nature. The apology was so unnecessary, but he repeated it again and again. The truth is, every time I use the vacuum, I think of him and appreciate his thoughtfulness.

Likewise, I've received computers as gifts twice in my life. A computer is extremely practical, since I use it at least eight hours a day. No, it's not the most romantic gift – like jewelry - or whimsical gift in the universe, but I never cease to appreciate the person who gave me my computer. It allows me to work, to play games, and to communicate with my friends and family.

I've not only been the recipient of practical gifts, but I've given my share of practical gifts as well. My boyfriend is into amateur car racing, and I've actually given him car parts as gifts. The car parts have given him the extra boost he needs to achieve new personal bests at the track, and I know that he thinks of me as he's revving his engine. I also know that he appreciates those practical gifts more than he would watches, DVDs, electronics, or other kinds of grown-up toys.

It's my belief that selecting appropriate gifts is more than a pastime or entertainment. Choosing the right gift means knowing your recipient and what he or she needs and wants. There are times when whimsical gifts are fun and fanciful, but there are other times when practical gifts are the order of the day. For me, and for many of the people to whom I give presents, useful and practical gifts outshine ethereal gifts any day of the week.

Every morning when I toast my bagel, I think of my sister, who gave me a shiny red toaster for my birthday last year. For me, that's proof that practical gifts serve as everyday reminders of the people who are nearest and dearest to me.
